How
Safe Are Bulletproof Vests |
|
|
|
Unfortunately,
we live in a time when it is commonplace to hear of gun crime
and knife crime on the television. Mass shootings seem to occur
regularly, as do terrorist attacks and incidences of gang violence.
You might be forgiven for thinking that it’s unsafe to walk
the streets. It is certainly true that we live in perilous times.
|
However,
it is also important to acknowledge that any danger we are in
right now is relative. Statistically, you are still highly unlikely
to be a victim of any of these things – just as you’re unlikely
to be in an airplane crash. The objective here is not to scare
you into thinking you can’t go out on the streets! But that
is not to say that you shouldn’t also take every possible measure
to protect yourself. While it might be unlikely that you become
the victim of an attack, the reality is that it only has to
happen once for your life to be changed forever.
A little preparation could very much save your life. And so,
you might be thinking of using bulletproof or knife-proof clothing
as an additional safety measure. Let's examine just how effective
this might be, what the different types are and how they work.
Can
Anything Be Completely Bulletproof?
A
bulletproof vest is not really bulletproof. Rather, it is ‘bullet
resistant’. This is similar to how a ‘waterproof phone’ will
still get damaged if submerged deeply enough in water and for
long enough. The phone is in reality water resistant, not water
proof.
TThus,
a vest will be able to stop a bullet depending on the nature
of the ammunition, the proximity of the attacker when they fired
the shot and more. And the level of protection offered is also
always going to depend on the specific product and its rating.
To
understand this rating, you should look for the ‘level of protection’.
The below reference should help you to make the right choice:
• Level II-A – These are the thinnest available at 0.16 inches
thick and can protect against a 9mm round.
• Level II – These are significantly thicker at 5mm (0.2 inches)
and should be capable of protecting against 9mm and .357 magnums
• Level III-A – These are 8-10m,m thick and able to protect
against anything up to a .44 magnum.
• Level III – These are designed for protecting against rifles
and can range between .5 to .75 inches thick
• Level IV – These are designed to protect against armor piercing
rifles and are .5 to .75 inches thick. They weigh around twice
as much as Level III vests however, at around 6-9 pounds.
Note that if a gun is fired at point blank range, it may still
cause injury or death, even if the vest is rated against that
form of ballistics. Note as well that there is still likely
to be significant bruising and even broken bones, even if the
bullet does not penetrate through the protective wear. Likewise,
the wearer may be knocked backwards and onto their back.
For civilians, there will be no need to walk around sporting
Level IV protection and the weight and bulk would be prohibitive.
Even the lightest amount of protection under the right circumstances
could be enough to save your life.

Resistant

Stab Proof
Stab proof vest is made up of two ballistic panels, one
in front and one in back, which are covered in nylon,
lending them protection from various external agencies
such as fungus and light. |
How Bulletproof
Clothes Work
These
vests are designed to absorb the significant impact from small
arms fire. Usually, this works using Kevlar – a highly strong
material that has been demonstrated in countless studies to
be effective in absorbing and distributing the energy that comes
into contact with it. This works best for glancing shots but
can still be effective against direct impact.
Kevlar in bullet proof vests is crafted into incredibly fine
threads (fibers) which are woven in the shape of a web. This
results in a panel that is highly dense but also light-weight
in order to offer the maximum shock absorption.
Knife
Protection
Something
worth noting is that a knife and a bullet are two very different
threats and thus a bullet proof vest will not necessarily protect
against a stab wound. A stab proof vest is different than a
bullet proof vest, though it often will be somewhat protective
against very low velocity rounds.
Fibers in stab proof vests are structured in such a way as to
protect against both stabbing and slashing motions. By using
multiple layers constructed in a woven pattern, it is possible
to reduce the likelihood of a knife cutting through all the
layers.
The most common type of protective vest is the covert vest.
This is intended to be worn beneath clothing (hence the name)
and should be concealable, lightweight and thinner than the
other type: the overt vest. Covert vests are what most civilians
will be more likely to wear. Like bulletproof armor, stab proof
vests also have their own rating and levels. The National Institute
of Justice characterizes the stab-proof properties of these
vests based on JIJ levels.
The primary levels are Level II and Level III. Level II vests
provide protection against attacks that are carried out at a
force of 33 joules. Level III vests offer protection against
43 joules, but are of course heavier and somewhat more expensive.
Getting
the Most From Protective Clothing
Wearing protective clothing will offer you a
lot of added protection and peace of mind, but note that it
is also down to the wearer to select the right items and to
make sure that they are well fitting. Body armor should allow
for the vast range of movements that the wearer might need to
make, including jumping, crouching, climbing stairs, running,
sitting, bending and more.
It’s
very important to avoid clothing that is overly lose or tight
fitting and it is also important to ensure that it covers the
entire body and that the navel is not visible underneath! If
the wearer gains significant weight, then they should always
be prepared to replace the item. Always check gear for obvious
signs of wear and tear and once the item has protected against
one bullet or knife attack, it should be replaced.
