Whilst
the number of deaths increased, the number of incidents fell,
with total attacks dropping by 22 per cent to 3,350 in 2023.
Pakistan recorded the most incidents of any country, with
490 attacks recorded. The rise in deaths but fall in number
of incidents shows how terrorism is becoming more concentrated
and more lethal. The number of countries recording a death
from terrorism fell to 41, considerably lower than the peak
of 57 countries recorded in 2015 and the 44 recorded in 2022.
By far the largest single terrorist attack that occurred in
2023 was the October 7th attack by Hamas-led militants in
Israel. This attack killed 1,200 people, and was the largest
single terrorist attack since 9/11, and one of the largest
terrorist attacks in history. The consequences of this attack
have been immense and are still unfolding, with an estimated
25,000 Palestinians killed by Israel’s retaliatory military
response as of February 2024.
NYT: "In the chaotic early months of the Covid pandemic,
when the U.S. was also going through the aftermath of George
Floyd’s murder, violent crime rose across the country. Murders
in 2020 increased at the fastest rate since national statistics
began in 1960. Other crimes, like shootings and car thefts,
also increased.
The surge in violence left some experts worried that the U.S.
might be entering another era of high crime, similar to that
of the 1960s through the ’90s. But the data over the past
year has offered a much more optimistic picture. The number
of murders in U.S. cities fell by more than 12 percent — which
would be the biggest national decline on record. The spike
that started in 2020 now looks more like a blip, and the murder
rate is lower than it was during the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s.
The recent data also suggests that the violent-crime rate
in 2023 was near its lowest level in more than 50 years"
The
US is actually ranked first for the highest number of crimes.
Among these are many knife crimes and gang-related crimes.
The reality of course is that in many ways, we actually live
in very safe times and that the likelihood of being attacked
is incredibly small.
But with that said, it still pays to be vigilant and just
a little paranoia is probably no bad thing. So, with that
in mind, what training will protect

Basic FAQ
The best way that you can protect yourself against any sort
of attacker with a weapon, is to be prepared. You could try
to wear some sort of bulletproof clothing, such as a vest
or a jacket. These sorts of personal body armor can keep you
safe in a variety of different scenarios. These bulletproof
clothing can provide protection from injury from both guns
and knives.
Certain kinds of bulletproof vests can even stop bullets from
high-caliber weapons. And it is just more practical to choose
to wear these sorts of bulletproof vests nowadays for the

personal body armor anyway? Shouldn't these sorts of body
armor be reserved for use by law enforcement and those in
the military?
Well, there are actually a number of reasons why you should
wear body armor, with statistics that support them. Rise in
gun homicide - The US is the country with the most gun-related
homicides.
There are about 4 to 5 gun-related deaths per 100,000 deaths
in the US that is dozens of times higher than other industrialized
nations.
Since 1968, more people have died due to gun violence within
the US, compared to the number of US citizens that have died
in wars fought by the US outside the country. And that number
is set to climb even higher!
Situational
Awareness
The
first and most important thing to consider is situational awareness.
This simply means being aware of your surroundings at all times
and being ready to respond if necessary.
To increase your situational awareness, you first need to position
yourself in any room or area in a position where you can see
a) as many people as possible and b) the exits. You then need
to establish a ‘baseline’ which means establishing what the
normal activity in this area might be. If you’re in a restaurant,
then you should expect to see people talking, eating, laughing,
getting up to use the bathrooms and waiting for their bills.
Unexpected behavior might include things like eating a low,
looking down, not eating or acting nervous and shifty. The aim
is to look for bodylanguage that doesn’t fit the situation –
but be aware that there are other explanations for unusual behavior,
with mental illness being a very real one.
The key is to try and engage peripheral vision while enjoying
your own activities. In the FBI and MI5, agents are taught to
use what is known as ‘splatter vision’. Here, they are taught
to look at an entire scene using peripheral vision rather than
honing in on any single site. It takes practice and it can feel
unnatural to lose the ‘detail’ that comes from focussing, but
you’re actually taking in a lot more information.
Be ready to respond if you notice anything unusual.
What
to do in a Crisis
The number one thing to do in any crisis is to vacate the area
immediately and then to call the police once you are in a safe
place.
The advice on airliners is always to attach your own oxygen
mask first, before trying to help anyone else. This is unfortunately
the case here too. While you might want to be the hero, you
actually risk igniting a potentially flammable situation and
if you are injured then there is nothing you can do to help.
Inform your friends and family to get to safety then do the
same yourself, moving straight for the exit.
The same thing happens if you are in a confrontation with someone.
Always try to neutralize and calm the situation first. Explain
that you don’t want trouble and that you’re happy to leave.
Don’t let your pride cost you your life, or the life of a loved
one.
Always keep distance between yourself and the assailant. While
in films knives are often swung and slashed, in reality they
tend to be very small, direct, stabbing motions into the vital
organs at close range. If your personal space is invaded, raise
your hands and step backwards. This shows you don’t want trouble
and also puts your hands in a ready position to block incoming
attacks.
And if an attacker won’t let you leave, then go straight for
an incapacitating attack: a hard kick to the groin or shins,
a stamp on the foot, or a punch to the bridge of the nose. Don’t
use excessive force but rather create a distraction and a chance
to leave. Attract attention to yourself so that they feel the
pressure of being watched.
How
to Prepare
The best ‘cure’ is prevention. In this case, that means avoiding
rough areas, avoiding walking through rough neighbourhoods,
and always trying to stay in the line of site of CCTV when you’re
out and about. Avoid using ATM machines if possible that are
located outside: go into the bank for preference.
There are things you can carry to make sure you are prepared
for a dangerous incident as well.
For instance, carrying an alarm or rape whistle can be a good
way to attract attention to yourself if necessary. The same
goes for mace. If you live in a particularly rough area, then
carrying a wallet or purse with some notes and some old cards
can also be a good idea as you can use this as a ‘decoy’ if
you are ever told to hand over your belongings.
Protective clothing can also be an optional form of protection.
Covert vests are worn under your clothing and can protect against
stabs or slashes. Make sure that they are the well-fitting and
that you can move around normally and don’t feel restricted.
A level II knife vest will protect you against attacks up to
33 joules, which should be sufficient for most people. For those
that really want added certainty, bulletproof vests are also
an option. A lightweight, Level II Kevlar vest will protect
against anything up to a .357 magnum. Again, this must be comfortable
and lightweight such that it can easily be worn around.
Finally, consider joining a self-defense class. This can make
a big difference to your ability to take care of yourself by
helping you to memorize movement patterns for blocking attacks
and strikes. There are many different forms of martial arts,
but for defending yourself against real-life attackers Kung
Fu is particularly well-suited.
